District 9's roster grows as Big League Softball World Series continues
KALAMAZOO -- The help is starting to come for the District 9 Big League softball team. The team, made up of players from the Grand Rapids area, has had to play shorthanded through the first two days of the Big League World Series being played at Vanderberg Park Little League Complex in Kalamazoo.
District 9 did make it through those days with a 2-1 record, including a 4-1 loss Friday night to a team from the Philippines, but began to get some of its players back Saturday.
One of those players, catcher Bethaney Murphy, drove 13 hours Friday from Chattanooga, Tenn.. She was in Tennessee with her travel team, Michigan Force, playing in a tournament last week.
The long car ride did not affect Murphy, who helped District 9 to a 13-2 win in six innings Saturday afternoon against District 5, a team from Windsor, Ontario, by going 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
District 9 went 2-0 Saturday, as it beat District 22 of Alice, Texas 11-0 in five innings Saturday evening on Lee Field.
"I’m happy to finally be here," said Murphy, who starred for Hudsonville. "I had a commitment to my travel team, but I got back as soon as I could. And I was happy to come in and contribute right away."
District 9 manager Jeff Edgerle, whose team has won two of the past three Big League titles and are the defending champions, is happy to see some of his players coming back, but is also glad to get a lot of playing time for all his players.
"You can never look at this (playing shorthanded) as a bad thing, because it forces us to play other players," said Edgerle, who won his 80th game as manager of District 9 with its victory against Canada. "They get some playing time, and they are not so green when they have to play. This really does help with our depth."
Edgerle got a solid performance out of pitcher Danielle Freeman, also of Hudsonville, against Canada. She threw five innings , allowed three hits and gave up two runs.
But those two runs were not charged to her, because District 9’s defense committed three errors in the fifth inning, allowing Canada to score its first two runs of the tournament. The team was shut out in its first two games.
"No matter if you are playing the best team down here, or the worst, if you don’t play defense you are going to give up runs," Edgerle said.

Mr. Verrusio could have faced a longer sentence, but he asked the judge to show mercy. He was convicted of three felonies for going to a 2003 World Series game in New York and failing to report it on his House financial disclosure form.

The image of a humiliated Mubarak flashed by CNN and BBC on television screens around the world must have surely weighed on Libyan dictators Muammar Ghaddafi and Syrian strongman Bashar Al-Assad to seriously consider their options.
His team found its bats in the sixth, scoring six runs on seven hits to force the mercy rule. Those two runs the defense gave up could cost District 9 in tiebreakers down the line. "Is it great to give up those two runs, probably not," Edgerle said.

The first installment of the grant has been made and to date, 74 cleft surgeries have been performed onboard a Mercy Ship docked in Ghana as a result. Going forward, the Smile Train grant will help to fund the cleft lip and palate surgical program onboard the Africa Mercy, the world’s largest non-governmental hospital ship set to deploy in the spring of 2007.
The Smile Train is known for their worldwide partnerships with agencies that perform cleft lip and palate surgeries. Mercy Ships is pleased to work with Smile Train to alleviate this easily repaired condition that, left untreated, leaves children with a debilitating condition.
