LSU men continue life without Tasmin
BATON ROUGE - The LSU basketball team has played four games without star forward Tasmin Mitchell, and coach John Brady has struggled to get used to it.
"I would walk in the locker room and think, 'Is everybody here?' Without Tasmin, it is almost as if the room had changed and was smaller," Brady said.
LSU lost the 6-foot-7 Mitchell to an ankle injury for the season just over a week ago. Brady may be looking up and down his bench for Mitchell tonight when the Tigers (5-2) play No. 25 Villanova (5-1) at 8:30 on ESPN in the Pizza Hut Big East/SEC Invitational tournament in Philadelphia.
"We are learning to play without him," Brady said. "It's all about his presence. I miss his whole attitude. We are filling in the holes and getting some guys who can score. The biggest thing is defensively. We have to get better. It will show against a team like Villanova, which is good at taking care of the ball and passing the ball. We will see how much we have improved."
LSU is coming off a pair of dominant wins over Nicholls State (68-41) and Southern (88-45). Junior college transfer guard Marcus Thornton leads the Tigers with 19.9 points a game, and freshman forward Anthony Randolph is averaging 15.4. Forward Chris Johnson is scoring 12.9 a game after replacing Mitchell in the lineup.
Scottie Reynolds, a 6-2 guard, leads Villanova with 17 points a game, and 6-7 forward Shane Clark is scoring a 12.6 a game.
"Their guards are really good," Brady said. "Their perimeter play and ability to go on a string and make baskets concerns me. Whether we can take care of the ball and make good decisions with the ball will be extremely important."
LSU returns home to host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
