Barbara Krieger, Bloomfield Hills resident and quilt maker, used her creative imagination to come up with a unique fundraising idea. She was aware of the campaign to pay off the Rejoice and Renew debt at First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham. The debt was a result of the extensive, beautiful renovations in the sanctuary and the new Nichols and Simpson organ.
The Quilt of Your Dreams was the result of Krieger's idea. She and a group of quilters planned a raffle and sold tickets. The lucky winner could chose a quilt design and custom colors. Krieger reasoned that the response would be greater if the winner could be assured that the quilt would match his/her decor and have a personalized design.
“I like to make quilts and I thought that I might meet new friends by doing this project. I approached quilters and they approached friends and we had a fine working group,” said Krieger. “I am a good technician but I need help with color selection. Every one of the people I approached agreed to help.”
As the publicity began, finished quilts and 36 quilt designs were displayed to inspire ticket sales. Church members pored over the designs and became very interested. Over 1,000 tickets were purchased. Mary Jane Bower, an interior designer, was the lucky winner of the raffle drawing.
“I was so honored to have won the drawing,” said Bower.
After winning, Bower chose a Blooming Nine Patch design. Krieger and Bower spent hours in a quilt fabric store choosing the material. Then the creativity began. Krieger welcomed helpers in her sewing room three afternoons a week. She kept the work area set up for weeks.
Some helpers like Maggie Robbins, Sheila Roebke and Liz Snyder were very experienced. “We learned a lot from one another,” said Krieger. One newcomer, Martha Kue, became involved because she wanted to learn to sew. She was welcomed and mentored by all.
“I estimate that we spent 130 hours making the quilt. When the design was finalized for the back of the quilt, it became very complicated as Mary Jane wanted hands of her friends, family and the quilt makers placed on the quilt. She had 85 outlines of hands made on paper,” said Krieger.

The hands were then outlined and cut out to be machine appliqued to the fabric. The quilters teased that they were an equal opportunity group when Bob joined them. He spent about 20 hours doing the machine embroidery. “I was glad to be part of it.
