Salem rape suspect asks court to pay for private investigator
BRENTWOOD — Jeffrey Gray, the former Salem Planning Board member charged with rape, is asking for the state to pay for a private investigator to aid in his defense, according to court documents.Gray, 49, is being held on charges of kidnapping and aggravated felonious sexual assault in connection with allegedly raping a pregnant woman at his home on South Shore Road in Windham on March 8.
Gray’s lawyer, Mark Stevens, filed a request with a judge for $1,200 to hire a private investigator, claiming that his client is indigent.
“If (he) had the means, he would employ an investigator to interview witnesses and investigate the case,” Stevens wrote.
The request comes weeks after a federal judge ordered Gray to pay $123,783 for defaulting on student loans and thousands of dollars in interest.
Gray also wound up before a Salem district judge in May and was ordered to remain in jail until he pays $23,089 in outstanding child support payments.
Judge Paul Moore ordered that any money Gray put toward bail would instead be put toward the support payments.
Stevens is requesting a judge to approve spending $1,200 in state money for the investigator.
If the request is approved, Stevens wants to hire Wes Decker, a retired Salem police officer who now operates a private investigation business, Focal Point Investigations in Hampstead, court documents say.
Gray is being held at the Rockingham County jail on $50,000 bail.
Police affidavits say that Gray met a 35-year-old Queens, N.Y., woman on Craigslist while she was looking for a roommate.
Gray paid for her plane ticket so she could live in his home, police said.
But soon after she arrived Gray made the woman watch pornographic movies on his computer, an affidavit says. Gray wore adult-sized diapers and “acted like a baby” as he sexually assaulted the woman and beat her, a police affidavit says.
Police said they seized a baby bottle, blue blanket, adult diapers, pacifiers and a light blue bed sheet while executing a search warrant on Gray’s home at 104 South Shore Road in Windham.
Gray was indicted in June by a Rockingham County grand jury on nine counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and a single count of kidnapping.
