And the honor of being adjudged as the best project went to Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirappally, for their simple, econimical and highly beneficial prototype of ‘low cost pepper separator’. The team has bagged Degree c award of Rs 1 lakh. While the second prize of Rs 50,000 went to MSS’s CET, Maharashtra. Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam, has won the third prize and Rs 30,000, for their ‘density and priority based traffic control system using computer vision in arm processor’. “Basically what we have here is a three foot ladder like device, with two stress resistant strings attached at both ends. The device can be tied to the coconut tree using these strings at the top and the bottom. When activated, first the string at the top loosens itself and gets re-fixed on the trees tump around a foot upward from its former position. Then the lower string loosens, and climbs up by the same length. That is one cycle. This process repeats until the machine reaches the tree top. A robotic arm attached with a rotating blade is fixed to top end of the machine which could cut down the coconut bunch.”

It takes the machine about three minutes to climb an average coconut tree. It is battery operated and the robotic arm affixed onto the machine is capable of rotating a full 360 degree. “The word 'helio'  means  solar in Greek and 'ped'  we took from mo'ped,'”  says Arun Chand. “Our aim is to provide the elderly and the physically challenged with a mode of transportation that is reliable, pollution free, and cheap. The present prototype has only a single solar panel in it, and even then it is capable of running for two hours. If commercially produced, the entire roof of the vehicle can be fitted with solar panels, which would more than double the running time. The stored energy is used in bulk only at the initial stages of motor functioning; once the functioning achieves a continuous flow, the energy requirement to maintain the running of the motor is much less. The vehicle is very easy to steer, is capable of climbing steep slopes and can pull the weight of three men.

Sierra Tools JB5571 Ceiling/Wall Light with Remote|News @ Is So ...

These ceiling/wall lights are a bit larger than I expected for the number of LEDs they have. They give out good light as would be expected from LEDs. The housing takes up much of the size of the lights. The reason I purchased these lights was to provide lighting on my sailboat, which would save the sailboat’s “house battery bank,” which brings up my biggest dissapointment. Size may not be important for some. That said, I wanted to have one light in the Captain’s stateroom, one light in the crews stateroom, and one light in the main salon Head (bathroom). Turns out that pushing any remote on/off switch controls “all” the lights that are present on the sailboat even if they are more than 30′ from each other. So, if someone uses the head at night, it turns on the lights in each of the staterooms as well. There should be some way, aside from uninstalling batteries, to disable lights you don’t want to turn on at times. So, I’m relegated to just using one of these lights on my sailboat, bummer.

I suppose this challenge would be the same in a home with lights in different rooms, if those rooms are close together, such as a hall closet and a closet in a guest room. They both turn on with either on/off switch. So, if a guest is sleeping, with her closet door open, that light will shine in her face when someone else turns on the hall closet light. Bummer.

Perhaps one upside is that you can place the remotes in different locations and control the light(s) at, say, entrances and exits, I suppose.

Other than these issues, the lights give out good light, however, I’m not sure how long the batteries will last. In the final analysis, if you are just buying one light, or can keep them out of range of each other’s remotes, than this would get 4 stars from me, as the size, due to the housing, is quite large.

It would be great if there was some way to isolate the lights on the remote control switch. That would override my need for smaller lights and I would give 5 stars.

Thanks,

Captain Tony

The purpose for getting this product was to make a lit area in our hallway that is very dark at night. The hallway had only one small bulb at the top of the stairway that only lit the very top of the staircase but not the bottom of the staircase which could be dangerous when walking down after dark. I bought two just in case one was not enough and now there is plenty of light to see the entire ground when walking downstairs. The best part was there was no wires or complicated installation. This is a good investment.
