Teaching in rural areas — 'Labs in a box' to aid local math, science educators
The "grand experiment" of using these "labs in a box" is a pilot program of the Rural Communities (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) STEM Initiative. RCSI is an Oak Ridge business/education partnership that is working with nine rural school districts to improve science and math skills of students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The pilot program, set to be tested in middle school classrooms this school year, will provide 27 math and science teachers in Anderson, Campbell, Loudon, Morgan, Roane, and Scott County school systems, as well as the Lenoir City, Oneida and Clinton city school systems, with materials that support the new statewide curriculum for math and science education.Science Lab Curriculums For Middle School - News
"It's critical because if they're not interested in math and science in middle school, when they get to high school it's almost impossible to rekindle that interest," said Diane Ward, Roane State's dean of social science, business and education.

Bridgeport Catholic Academy provides an education that enables each child to become a responsible, life-long learner, beginning with the pre-kindergarten program and ending with eighth grade. The curriculum offers early childhood, primary/intermediate and upper/departmental programs that promote and encourage independent learning. The curriculum consists of core subject areas in addition to art, music, Spanish, physical education, and computer technology.
The school has a library, science lab, fine arts room, and a computer lab. All classrooms have computers and Wi-Fi internet access. Many classrooms have Promethean Interactive white boards, which enhance the curriculum. iPads will be used to help differentiate instruction within the classroom.
The gym accommodates physical education classes and an extensive sports program. The students participate in football, basketball, volleyball, and cheerleading programs. Bridgeport Catholic Academy stresses the need to be of service to others while maintaining high academic standards. Students participate in service projects throughout the year including making cards for the military, sponsoring food and toy drives, and volunteering for the Special Olympics.
During the school year older students are faith partners to the younger students. They act as role models to them and they participate in activities together. Graduates are prepared to continue their education at top high schools in the area. This year, six students received scholarships for their academic achievements.
Students received many other honors this year including three being named finalists for the 11th Ward Boy/Girl of the Year, seven winners in the American Eagle competition, four finalists in the “Do the Write Thing” competition, two recipients of awards from the Illinois Council Against Handguns, five semi-finalists for Illinois Fatherhood, one winner for Illinois Fatherhood, and one winner in the DuSable Essay competition.
