Lollapalooza 2011: Q&A with Friendly Fires
When British band Friendly Fires gets on stage Saturday at Lollapalooza, expect a lot of dancing — on stage and off. With Ed Macfarlane dancing around the stage while he, Edd Gibson and Jack Savidge bust out some of the best beats around, the crowd will likely find it hard to resist moving as well. The three pride themselves on making audiences go wild, with music that's not techno, not pop, just dance and fun. "Our goal is to make vibrant, widescreen songs, but they must retain a spontaneity, have an energy and mysticism around them," Edd Gibson said in an interview for Lollapalooza. And Macfarlane tells USA TODAY he looks forward to another chance to bring audiences to life at Lolla this year:
Q. How did you all meet and get into music?
A. We met when we were 13 years old at the same school. I think I was into a lot of punk and a lot of hardcore music, and Jack, our drummer, was really into Oasis. It was one of those classic starting a band out of boredom. We just wanted to do something that could possibly get us out of the suburbs.
Q. Were you any good?
PHOTOS: 20 years of LollapaloozaYes! Our first gig was at someone's house party. The gig was actually going really well, there were lots of kids dancing along. A UK DJ was playing in the other room and no one was dancing to him so the guy whose party it was came over and told us to stop playing because he wanted more people to go and dance for the DJ. So it was kind of a bit of a disaster, but it went well.
Q. How would you say your style has evolved through the years?
A. It's evolved a hell of a lot. I think when we were younger we were covering cheesy pop punk songs, and then we started discovering disco records … the whole, I suppose, intellectual end of the punk world. It wasn't until we were 17 that we first started going to raves and started clubbing. We were listening to a lot of British experimental sort of techno. That was mainly because of a musician called Chris Clark who was definitely a massive influence on me, and he sort of encouraged me to produce our band's music and try to be as self- sufficient as possible in our recording.
Q. Can you describe the differences between the audiences at festivals and other venues both in and out of America?

What advice would Skeet give to someone starting out? “The best thing you could do is to be yourself. When I first started DJing everyone wanted to hear hip-hop and I got into house music and everybody called it techno and no one liked techno.
Top Techno Songs by Independent Music Artist Third Temple | Divine ...
He’s released two albums so far, both which are available for online download. The first is entitled “The Cave” and the second is called “Sanctuary.” Both are very interesting specimens.
Third Temple is able to weld together carefree dancing with a little bit of ancient history in “Shushan”, the place of great prophets like Daniel and their expansive visions of the future, as well as the dramatic turns of the story of Esther which thwarted an ancient holocaust of a nation. You can feel both pulses run through the song, and you can really lose your body to it.
His song “Machine Language” is very robotic and is one of my personal favorites. According to his bio, the man behind Third Temple works as a computer programmer during the day, so he would certainly know how computers, if ever, would dance. This is a great rendition.
“Nine Days in Prague” begins with a more solemn mood, as though describing an experience where you are able to walk the streets of the sleepy city of Prague at night, your footsteps echoing through ancient corridors, and then you suddenly walk out into a bustling neon street with the bars and parties and nightlife.
If you want to take a mind and soul journey to distant Eastern lands, with your hips and shoulders still shaking on the dance floor, then “Viceroy” is an interesting vehicle for such an experience. It’s eclectic, syncretic, and just downright colorful, and shows a promising direction to Third Temple. I guess the historical references are kept intact as well, a reference to the British viceroy governors in India.
“Two Birds” is an experience a bit like becoming a car in an assembly line, driven along by the conveyor belt, the banging noises and the sparks as robotic arms weld your pieces together. It will certainly appeal to fans of the industrial techno genre. My only complaint though is with the title. Nothing “birdy” about this song at all!
His song “Huggs” is so far his only ambient offering, but very tasteful. Not just a spur of the moment ambient track, but something thoughtful and well-crafted. It seems that Third Temple has the ability to delve into ambient territory while keeping his signature style, which is quite a feat.
If you’re thinking of combining religious observances with techno music, then “Sabbath with Devorah” is a good example to follow. Eminently danceable track, but you can feel that there’s a story behind it, something very meaningful. And if you take the title as a clue, then you can imagine the song of an ancient war-prophetess, praising a woman who hammered a nail into a sleeping general’s head.
