Arts Alumnus Captures “Love in the Time of Riots” | ArtsWIRE

Photographer Richard Lam (BA ’97) snaps now famous shot of couple kissing during the post Stanley Cup riots in downtown Vancouver.

Richard Lam was at the right place at the right time. While major international media debate whether or not it was staged and hunt to find the couple , Lam recounts being caught in the mayhem after last night’s Stanley Cup final.

“I was just shooting the game and the post-game press conference. When we left Roger’s Arena, the overturned cars were burning and the crowd was wild,” said Lam. While capturing the action in front of The Bay and through the major arteries downtown, Lam spotted the couple in the street. “It was just a moment of the night,” said Lam.

The Vancouver Sun reports that Lam got the shot, and several more, not thinking much of it.  “I didn’t even look at it. A colleague said ‘nice photo’. Then I went back to the editing room, and looked at it. My jaw dropped.”

According to Lam, the police were very active. “The police horses moved us away from the danger areas,” said Lam. “You couldn’t stop or you would be steamrolled.”

Lam, formerly the Photo Editor of The Ubyssey , shot the 98’ Battle in Seattle riot.  He currently works as the photographer for UBC Athletics and a freelance photographer for CP, Reuters and Getty Images.

A self-taught photographer, Lam majored in Political Science with a minor in History.
