Commentary: Miami Dolphins get early passing marks with roster moves

&Mdash; There remains much to sort out about the Dolphins, because, well, it's only August.

And it's early August, at that.

It's a cinch there will be more comings-and-goings through the revolving door of this year's high-speed training camp in the wake of 4 1/2 months of work lost to the NFL lockout.

But the Dolphins do deserve to feel at least a little bit good about themselves with the first pre-season game coming up Friday night in Atlanta, which will be exactly one month before the season-opener in Sun Life Stadium on a Monday night against New England.

(How swell of the schedule-makers, by the way, to send Miami into the 2011 season on a date with the Patriots, who beat the Dolphins twice last year and pounded out a 79-21 scoring edge doing so.)

No need to borrow trouble now, though, because the Dolphins appear to have done a nice job of roster reconstruction to this point.

And never mind choosing a side in The Not-So-Great Quarterback Debate, because it misses the point. It's true that incumbent Chad Henne isn't a headliner quarterback or even a particularly good one, but neither is Denver's Kyle Orton in the blessedly quiet he's-not-coming review of the situation.

The point that shouldn't be missed is that Miami has done some nifty addition and subtraction so far, and it was linebacker Karlos Dansby - a newcomer himself last year - who recently told me, "We've got some nice pieces. I think we can do some things."

The best things the Dolphins do figure yet again to come on defense where an upgrade at linebacker - Kevin Burnett as a Dolphins newbie in place of jettisoned Channing Crowder - is the most important change. But there is also the matter of the return of defensive end Jared Odrick, a first-round pick whose rookie season was lost to injury last year. And then there's pass-rush specialist Jason Taylor, who'll be making a third turn with the Dolphins.

It's all enough for coach Tony Sparano, who's job might be on the line, to admit that the defense could be "a pretty good group."

The concerns - as they have been since Dan Marino's heyday - are on offense.

The reconfiguration of the line continues as an annual work in progress, and there's big trouble ahead if star tackle Jake Long is hurt and not just resting on the physically-unable-to-perform list. There are moving parts in other places along the line, but what's new? And playing a rookie at center (first-round pick Mike Pouncey) is the very definition of risk.

How would Eagles tackle a holdout by DeSean Jackson?

That it would be better for Jackson to be in camp goes without saying. That he deserves a new deal also goes without saying. A holdout would complicate things, but only a little - unless there is a chasm between what Jackson is seeking and what the

5 simple steps to a happy working life | babycarriershop.net

1.YOU ARRIVE LATE – frequently

Feeding and dressing your little one against the clock is a real challenge – and don’t even mention the traffic on the way to the nursery. It’s like you’ve done a day’s work before you even get to the office. As you scuttle to your desk, you feel like all eyes are on you …

WHY IT HAPPENS Plan to arrive 30 minutes early. It may never happen but it does mean you’ll probably arrive when you’re supposed to! Learn to love quick showers, leave the toys on the floor and the dishes in the sink. And talk to your boss. Offer to take a shorter lunch break or ask if they’ll consider flexible hours while you adjust.

MORALE BOOST Lorraine Thomas of The Parent Coaching Academy (theparentcoachingacademy.co.uk) says, “Being a mum makes you a multi skilled problem solver! Lots of employers value this, and rate parents as really effective employees. You may be late, but once there, you work hard. Don’t such thing as a perfect mum de-value yourself.”

2.YOU LEAVE ON TIME – always

Childcare arrangements mean you have to leave on time. Cue grumbles from work colleagues who often keep later hours and feel resentful.
