Auburn-based agency announces awards
An Auburn-based agency and two national organizations will give $235,000 in monetary awards to 15 educators and students around the country.
According to an announcement released Friday, The Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and American Farm Bureau Federation will present eight recipients with cash awards for excellence in agricultural science today during a luncheon in Washington D.C.
In another announcement, officials with the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce stated both agencies were scheduled to award eight people with cash prizes for excellence in the life sciences on Monday during a separate ceremony in Washington.
Each award recipient received either $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000.
The 2011 Agriscience Awards are going to the following recipients: Randall Prather, professor of reproductive biology at University of Missouri; Andrew Paterson, a professor at the University of Georgia; Michele Sutton, a teacher at Tompkins Seneca Tioga BOCES; Melissa Braun, a teacher in Gillett, Wis.; Paul Heasley, a high school science teacher in State College, Pa.; Laura Lane, a high school senior in New Mexico; Bhiravi Rathinasabapathi, a high school senior in Gainesville, Fla.; and Stephen Bethel, a high school senior in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Recipients of the Life Science Awards include the following: Melissa Knothe Tate, a biomedical engineering professor at Case Western Reserve University; Deborah Wasylik, life science teacher in Orlando, Fla.; Coit Hendley, a high school chemistry teacher in Greenbelt Md.; Leslie Brinson, a biology educator in Durham,N.C.; Amy Chyao, a high school senior in Plano,Texas; Kayla Dowell, a high school junior in Manhattan, Kan.; and Christopher Duncan-Lewis, a senior in Winter Springs, Fla.
The Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation was established by the U.S. Congress in 1992 to support research, study and labor designed to produce new discoveries in all fields of endeavor for the benefit of mankind, according to the organization.
The foundation began giving out the Life Sciences Awards three years ago and founded the Agriscience Awards last year.
