The Sustainability Collaborative, recognized as a leading think-tank, research consultancy, and conference facilitator in the field of sustainability, has teamed with Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and IHS (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of information and analysis, and other notable sponsors, to host SustaiNEXT-West, Nov. 3 – 4, 2011 at the Arizona Grand Resort, in Phoenix, Arizona. The conference will bring together leading voices in sustainability from business, academia, government and community to explore universal sustainability.

Universal sustainability is a new concept developed by Robert L. Lattimer, senior fellow of diversity studies at Rutgers University, which centers on the belief that “society seeks to explore, exist within, and to preserve (our natural world).” Considered the next-generation thinking relative to sustainability, universal sustainability was first presented by Lattimer at SustaiNEXT-East in March 2011, and is positioned to address the challenges of today and tomorrow including economic growth, jobs and education. This approach differs from current thinking, where sustainability activities are often imposed as distractions or burdens.

Lattimer will lead a discussion on this topic at SustaiNEXT-West, and will be joined at the event by other notable speakers including: Leland H. Hartwell, distinguished sustainability scientist, Arizona State University Global Institute of Sustainability, and winner of the  2001 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine; and Gary Cohen , co-founder, president, and executive director of Health Care without Harm, the international campaign for environmentally responsible healthcare.

You know what it means when you see AZ in the title?

Road trip!!

Kristina and I hit the road not long ago to the sweet town of Gilbert, Arizona. Kristina’s blood has had to have thinned in the past 8 or so years since she decided to become a California girl because she was as shocked as me with that 100+ degree heat! Terri and Kristina have known each other for a dozen or so years and I can safely say that Kristina was a pile of mush and nerves when talking about her Terri getting hitched! I had to hold Kristina’s hand a couple times as she fought tears. It’s amazing how the dynamic of shooting a wedding of someone you know. It’s emotional in all the right ways. It’s an honor to be there for a friend, capturing their most treasured day but it adds a twinge of pressure at the same time. You want it to be perfect.

Let’s just say that Terri + Robert are perfect. And together? They are drop dead gorgeous.

We had fun in the AZ sun at the Shenandoah Mill . It’s a quaint old building nestled on a busy street, totally modest from the curb but what a great place to have the party of the year!
