On July 11, workers began building a vertical ramp, skateboard bowl and a BMX park, along with a festival village, just north of the pier and stretching to Caroline Street, adjacent to the Boardwalk, for the sports competitions.

This is the first time the Dew Tour, now in its seventh year, has come to Ocean City. The resort, the Tour’s first beachfront venue, edged out Virginia Beach for the privilege of hosting the event.

The Pantech Open, the first of four events on the 2011 Dew Tour, kicked off Thursday with the skateboarding Vert and Bowl and BMX Park and Vert qualifying competitions. The Pantech Open marks the debut of the Dew Tour’s skate bowl competition.

“We’re extremely excited about the Dew Tour coming to our area,” Susan Jones, executive director of the Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association said last week. “We’re extremely honored to have an event of this caliber with national exposure in Ocean City.”

Many professional athletes will be attending the Dew Tour to compete in the skateboarding and BMX events.

Athletes confirmed for the Ocean City leg of the tour include skateboarders Shaun White, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, who is looking to defend his title as the 2010 Dew Cup Vert champion, Andy MacDonald, Bob Burnquist, Pedro Barros, Zach Miller, Alex Perelson, Sky Seljig, Chad Bartie, Rune Glifberg, Marcelo Bastos, Sandro Dias, Mike Owen, Josh Rodriguez, Rob Lorifice, Elliot Sloan, Josh Borden, Daniel Cardone, Ben Galloway, Omar Hassan, Ben Hatchell, Kevin Kowalski, Jimmy Marcus, Brad McClain, Renton Millar, Nolan Munroe, Ben Raybourn, Steven Reeves, Adam Taylor and Maryland’s own Bucky Lasek.

In the BMX Vert competition, spectators can watch Jamie Bestwick (Dew Cup champion 2005-10), Chad Kagy, winner of the Dew Tour Championship in Las Vegas last year, Vince Byron, Austin Coleman, Mike Mancuso, Steven McCann, Dennis McCoy, Simon Tabron, Jimmy Walker, Zackery Warden and Francisco Zurita.
