35000 in metro Detroit still without power
By 10:15 p.m., the number of households without power had fallen to 35,000, according to DTE spokesman John Austerberry.
The majority of the outages were in Wayne County, with 15,000. About 7,000 customers were without power in Oakland County; 6,000 in Livingston County; 4,000 in Macomb County; 2,000 in Monroe County, and the remainder were scattered throughout southeast Michigan.
Strong storms blew through metro Detroit this afternoon leaving 71,000 DTE Energy customers without power, a company spokesman said tonight.
We will continue to work through out the night, but it will be a smaller number of crews that will be working on high-priority jobs, Austerberry said, adding that crews will likely be working through Tuesday and Wednesday to restore power to all its customers.
Meanwhile the Detroit Police Departments 12th Precinct was without power and phone lines after todays storm, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Eren Stephens. By 10:30 p.m. Stephens said the precinct was operating with generators, but still had no phone service. She said she did not know how long the precinct was powerless today.
Stephens also said the weather caused the death of a 31-year-old Detroit man who was electrocuted after a power line fell on him about 7 p.m.
Stephens said the man was walking in the 19100 block of Lenore near Seven Mile on the citys west side when the line apparently dislodged and fell atop him.

Time: July 29, 2011, 1:30 pmAlicia – I understand the frustration. But the information gap for the low income families is not as vast as it sounds. They just have to make an effort to watch and listen for public service announcements just like everyone else does.
Consider this: How many times have you heard people say that they get the paper “only for the coupons”? I am astounded by that logic. If someone is that interested in saving money, they also need to read the news briefs and Community Page section for information that will stretch their budget. Count up how many times I start off a blog report with “this post was in today’s edition of …”
One of the reasons Monroe on a Budget became an online project is so we could get those PSAs to anyone who had access to the Internet — regardless of whether they bought the paper.
There are other ways that public service information is reported to the community. The local utility companies put fliers in their bills about assistance programs. My 98.3 FM announces local events and campaigns such as the school kids’ backpack drive. United Way has a hotline called 211 where people can call and find out where to go or who to call to get information on a particular situation. The local social workers are invited to a workshop every year so they can learn about other resources that will help their clients and do word of mouth referrals.
There also are several community expos throughout the year including Project Connect, which is specifically aimed at the neediest families. It is always scheduled in conjunction with one of the God Works! Family Soup Kitchen meals.
