Opposing views of District Attorney's campaign finances
It's always amusing to see how political consultants come up with entirely different stories to explain the exact same data.
Take, for example, the new campaign finance reports for the District Attorney's race in November. As of the end of June, incumbent George Gascón had received $234,486 in campaign contributions.
(Donors were largely a who's-who of the city's upper crust including former Secretary of State George Shultz, former Giants managing partner Peter Magowan, former 49ers president Carmen Policy, and party planner Stanlee Gatti.)
The campaigns for his competitors were crowing about the lackluster totals. Jon Golinger, campaign manager for Sharmin Bock, said former District Attorney Kamala Harris had raised more than twice as much as Gascón by this point in her re-election campaign.
"He's had maybe more of a difficult time than he realized convincing people to part with their hard-earned dollars if they're not convinced he's up to the job," Golinger said.
Eric Jaye, who's running David Onek's campaign, agreed, saying, "If his fundraising is a reflection of the support he has in San Francisco, he's got a difficult road ahead."
Maggie Muir of Gascón's campaign was shocked - shocked! - that anybody could question the strong fundraising totals.
"Our internal goals were met," she said. "George Gascón is busy running the district attorney's office, and that's his priority right now."
Bock, by the way, has raised $239,337. Onek raised $125,729 during this period, but has racked up about $284,000 overall because he's been running for more than a year.
