Learning how to defend yourself
About 50 women walked into Paola High School on Monday night hoping to learn a few tips about self defense, and they all left knowing that if the unthinkable were to happen to them, theyll be ready. The event, which was organized by the Paola Police Department, was part of the T.A.K.E. Defense Training program that was established in honor of Ali Kemp who was murdered at the age of 19 in June 2002 while working at a public swimming pool in Leawood. Monday nights class was particularly powerful because Alis father, Roger Kemp, was on hand to talk to the women about the importance of learning how to defend themselves from predators. The instructors for the class were husband and wife team Bob and Jill Leiker. The couple have extensive karate experience, but much of their advice was on how to mentally outthink and avoid a predator. The Leikers talked about the ABCs of self defense, with the first two letters (awareness and boundary setting) being more about preventing an attack. Jill said its important to think about how you respond if attacked, and she also said to make sure you dont allow people to violate your personal space. Bob talked about how people are creatures of habit, and predators often study potential victims to find out when they might be most vulnerable. The final letter (combat) is sometimes unavoidable, and the Leikers taught a variety of self defense techniques based on four specific target areas: eyes, nose, throat and groin. The women were encouraged to act as crazy as they can and be extremely loud if they are ever attacked. There is nothing more important than your personal safety, Bob said. Roger Kemp can attest to that, and he said he will continue to attend the T.A.K.E. self defense classes across the country in the hopes that what happened to his daughter wont happen again. If we can save one life out there, it is worth it, Roger said.Karate Training Tips - News

Sports | Principles Of Self Defense And Martial Arts Training ...
So what are the major differences between reality based self defence training and regular old school martial arts? In my opinion the most important parts of both definitions of self defense and martial arts is to ultimately become a better fighter between armed and unarmed opponents.
One of the major differences between the two is that in martial arts training systems, they are designed for combat with ranks, belt colors and a larger learning curve considering that it is a traditional martial art. I highly agree that any type of traditional martial arts training you do is extremely beneficial to improve your self defence training.
There are also flaws however with sport based combat arts that claim to have valid self defence training incorporated in their system. The biggest sport based martial arts that don't work are like Taekwondo. This fighting style has no real working value in street fights or reality based martial arts training.
However there are also a lot of different self defense and martial arts fighting styles that I highly recommend that are exclusively designed for self defence training. These styles include: Krav Maga, Jeetkunedo Concepts and Karate. There are also other types of martial arts as well as hybrid self defense systems that are just as good.
Ultimately studying a traditional martial art and a self defense system will help improve your core foundation in self defence scenarios and street fighting. You need to know the techniques that are easy to rely on, memorize and use in emergency. If you want to become an even better fighter I recommend you try reading Bruce Lee's thoughbts on philosophy of combat.
Be as in shape and healthy as you can be and remember that martial arts are limited only to the amount of time you have practiced them, that make them easy to remember and use a life or death battle on the street. Train hard every day, do cardio, lift weights, eat healthy. This will both improve your physical capabilities of fighting as well as help you to progress in any traditional martial arts training style you do.
Get the very best from the martial arts by constantly absorbing as much information and techniques as you can. The more skilled and wise fighter always wins the battle. And another thing to remember is that it takes constant practice to become a better fighter.
