Hmong group gets new church

Lompoc’s Hmong church has moved out of temporary quarters and into its own building. 

In May the Central Pacific Coast Hmong Alliance Church departed the Peace Lutheran Church on West Ocean Avenue and into its new building, the former Masonic Lodge on East Fir Avenue. 

On Aug. 27 the Christian congregation will host a special event to celebrate the purchase of their church.

Hmong (pronounced mong) is an ethnicity and the language of a people born in northern Laos and also in the northern regions of Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and southern China. 

The church’s pastor, Stephen Tia Xiong (pronounced  Zhong), was born in the Xieng Khoung province of northern Laos in 1964.

After the signing of the peace agreement that led to the end of the Vietnam War, Xiong and his family fled to Thailand to escape communist hostilities. The family lived there for three  years until they were able to come to the United States by way of a United Nations sponsored refugee program. 

Xiong said his father, who served under famed Hmong soldier Gen. Vang Pao, was killed during the Vietnam War. He was also a well known shaman among the Laos people. 

According to county records, the building on Fir Avenue served as the Lompoc Masonic Lodge for many years. Pastor Xiong and his congregation purchased the property April 18.

Soon after the papers were signed, the group began to clean up the grounds around the church. According to Xiong they chopped down about seven pine trees and planted avocado trees in their place. 

“We cleaned up pretty good,” he said. “People were excited, young and old came to give a hand.”

They finished the work at the end of May and had their first service in June, he said.

Xiong is one of the founders of the church, which he said was established in 1982 with only four or five families. In the early days of the church, the meetings rotated among the homes of the families.

Over the years, the congregation has grown to over 45 families. Until recently the membership used and rented various spaces throughout town including the former Lompoc municipal pool.

Pastor Xiong pointed out the various rooms in the building and their planned uses. The congregation has been meeting in what will become the banquet hall, while the sanctuary, that will accommodate approximately 200 people, is being remodeled. 

The church is awaiting permits to hang its shingle. So the outside of the modern structure still shows signs of being a Masonic Lodge, but the inside has already been transformed.
