One hundred years ago Canada was considered a great land of opportunity – so much so companies were advertising in English newspapers for immigrants to settle and seek a new life in this great land.
One such company was the Keewatin Flour Mill whose pleas for people to come and settle in Keewatin, Ontario, included the promises of a secure job, free land on which to build a house and a loan to cover the passage.
Fred and Elizabeth Parfitt were one of the couples who took advantage of the flour mill's offer. They packed up their belongings and their family to sail across the Atlantic a century ago, in 1911. Their daughter Catherine, her husband Edwin Barnard and daughter Molly, as well as son-in-law, Alfred Balchin, who had married their daughter Minnie just four weeks previous, set sail with them to seek fame and fortune in this glorious land.
Prior to their departure, the Conservative Political Club, of which Fred was the well-liked and respected steward, honoured the couple with a wonderful farewell party. In addition to a "purse of gold", both were presented with suitable gifts, but unfortunately Fred's gold pendant has gone by the wayside over the years. However, Elizabeth's horseshoe design gold brooch has survived and is now worn proudly by Lorelie Mayo with the inscription on the reverse reading, "Presented to Mrs. E. Parfitt by members of the Conservative Club, Bradford-On-Avon May, 1911".
Upon arrival in Keewatin they were met by the couple's three youngest sons - William, who had arrived earlier that year, and David and Arthur who had arrived in Keewatin a year previous and had already written their parents about the opportunity for a wonderful life in Canada. It should be noted Fred and Elizabeth's eldest son Fred Parfitt, Jr., never did come to Canada as by then he was married to Ellen and had his own life. It was quite a joy for the couple to welcome their daughter, Agnes, in 1913. She had stayed behind and later married Albert Deverall. They had a son Hank, who when grown up, became a teacher with the local school system.
Elizabeth and Fred did make one return trip to England after the First World War to see Fred, Jr., and family. At the same time they attended a memorial service to honour those who gave their lives in that war. The Parfitt's son David was amongst those so saluted for their bravery and valour.
