Cooling centers quiet on Day 1
COOL OFF HERE The following community centers are available this week for people in Greater Lafayette seeking relief from the heat:
• Salvation Army, 1100 Union St., 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
• Bauer Community Center, 330 Fountain St., 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
• Hanna Center, 1201 N. 18th St., 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m.
• Center@Jenks Rest, 1915 Scott St. (Columbian Park), 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
Tuesday's smoldering heat meant a change of plans for the kids attending Hanna Community Center's summer camp.
Instead of visiting a West Lafayette pottery shop, camp director Ken Ron opted for a trip to one of the fountains at Purdue University.
"So that helped cool us off," Ron said.
The kids returned to the center, 1201 N. 18th St., to watch a movie.
Camp member Jazmeralda Hodge, 11, of Lafayette, found the fountain refreshing. She has air conditioning at home, so when it's hot outside, she stays indoors and plays games.
Sweltering temperatures had Greater Lafayette residents finding ways to stay comfortable as humidity and high dew points pushed thermometers to the upper-90s by late afternoon. At 5 p.m., the heat index was 107 in Lafayette, according to AccuWeather.com. Earlier, the "real-feel" temperature reached 112.
Bad news for fans of cooler weather: Temps are forecast near 100 degrees by Thursday, with a heat index expected around 118.
Hanna Center is one of four local agencies serving as "cooling centers" this week for residents without access to air conditioning. In advance of the rising temps, the Tippecanoe County Chapter of the American Red Cross reached out to community centers to ask if they had room for people seeking shelter from the heat.
On Tuesday, the first day of operation as an official cooling center, Hanna Center had yet to receive its first customer coming in just to cool off, said executive director Dewayne Moffitt.
Aside from regularly scheduled activities early Tuesday afternoon, things also were quiet at Bauer Community Center, 330 Fountain St.
"We haven't had anyone come in," said director Cassie Leak.
Ditto for the Center@Jenks Rest in Columbian Park. That surprised executive director Catherine Moran, who encouraged anyone, not just senior citizens, to stop by. But she admitted more people might have air conditioning at home than in times past or were finding other indoor activities to stay cool, such as visiting local public libraries or strolling through Tippecanoe Mall.

WHS 2011 - EX470 CPU temperature - cool n quiet - The Windows Home ...
I upgraded my EX470 to WHS 2011. The CPU temperature is much higher now, 60C typically instead of 38C. It seems like the Cool n Quiet feature that throttles the CPU speed and voltage isnt working? On WHS v1 the CPU speed would drop to 1ghz at idle along with a voltage drop, but this doesnt appear to be happening now. Is there anything special that needs to be done to get cool n quiet working in WHS 2011?
