Timberland narrows its 2nd-quarter loss
Boot and clothing maker Timberland Co., which is being purchased by VF Corp. for more than $2.2 billion, said Thursday that its second-quarter loss narrowed as its revenue improved.
Timberland cautioned that higher product costs are likely to continue through the year, but that "strategic" price hikes in the second half should help offset them.
The company lost $20.1 million, or 39 cents per share, for the period ended July 1. That compares with a loss of $23.5 million, or 44 cents per share, for the prior-year period.
The performance was in line with the expectations of analysts polled by FactSet.
Revenue rose 27 percent to $240.1 million from $189 million, benefiting from strength in Asia, Europe and North America, and beating expectations. Wall Street forecast revenue of $208.6 million.
Timberland said North American results were helped by sales of Timberland footwear, Timberland PRO footwear and SmartWool accessories.
Global footwear revenue gained 28.2 percent to $168.7 million, while worldwide wholesale revenue climbed 28.7 percent to $151.1 million.
In June Timberland agreed to a buyout deal with VF Corp., whose brands include Wrangler, Nautica and The North Face. VF is offering $43 for each Timberland share.
VF plans to make Timberland part of its outdoor and action sports business, with Timberland's headquarters remaining in Stratham.
Timberland made its name in the 1970s with its waterproof heavy duty boot and later, boat shoes.
The company's shares added a penny to $42.80 in morning trading.

Featured Review: (by Bobster), I bought these about 3 years ago and wear them to work, alternating with another pair of non-Timberland boots. Price was right because they were blems (lace hole rivets needed to be touched up with a file). The soles wore through after a year or so exposing a “foam” inside the rubber but they were still wearable. The padded area at the heels also wore through inside. Just recently, the leather at the toe of one of the boots came detached from the sole so it is time for a new pair of boots. I think I’m going to go back to the good ol’ 12281 (nubuck, non-insulated, 8″) of which I’ve had 4-5 pairs and get 4-5 years out of them…
Don’t do it! This is the 5th pair of timberlands I’ve had and i cant think of one pair that was waterproof, warm and comfortable. So this will be my last pair. Spend the extra money and get something worth buying. I was in 2″ of snow this past December and my feet were freeeeeeezing and wet because they seams aren’t sealed well. You get what you pay for, so do it right the first time or you’ll pay for it twice. LL Beans next time!!!!!

Great boots for the first month or two after that they wore out very fast, the side completely blew out of the boot. They are definetly not waterproof. Not deserving of the Pro label at all. If you want a nice boot that looks nice and is comfortable these are great but if you really plan to put them through the paces I would not reccommend these boots at all. I plan to contact Timberland about the warranty soon.

Feel great right out of the box, no break in. However, the first pair I had, the leather on the toe wore through in 3 months. Replaced them for free with another pair. These are now worn through in the same spot after a year.
