"The first is an AEC Mammoth Minor from AEC Trucks in Camera by S.W. Stevens-Stratton, which aren't that hard to find photos of, but the second one of a Leyland Steer is the only one I've ever seen with such a short wheelbase. This is from Leyland Heritage by Alan Thomas. I'm not sure if this short wheelbase model ever went into production or whether this was a one-off prototype.FAO Trevor Jones.
Good Afternoon Steve and Trevor,
BLB Members in the UK maybe interested to know that the AEC Mammoth Minor 6x2 truck depicted at one above, was operated by Western Tpt Ltd on contract to the client company in Avonmouth Ind Estate, Bristol, which made Sulphurous Carbon Black material for use in Tyre manufacturing.
The 14 Large Bins on the Trailer were full of this dusty material and were en-route to the Goodyear Tyre Factory in Wolverhampton : Judging by the lack of a front number plate, this looks like a PR photo at the start of this intensive double shift operation 24/7 which from memory was in 1969.
The UK maximum maximum weigh limit at the time was 32 tons GCW, which would have given a payload of circa 22 tons with that short Flat trailer in 1969. But the reason for the Twin-steer Axle configuration on this AEC truck was that in 1967 the debate started in Govt circles about finally increasing the Max GCW of articulated trucks to 38 tons, which finally came about in April 1982.
So for 12 years or more this five (5) axle combination was operated at six tons less than its design weigh : But with only 202 BHP under the throttle pedal and a six speed transmission, it was always likely to give a leisurely OTR performance anyway, especially Nth on the A38 up to Gloucester, because the southern end of the M5 was not built until 1970.
Please note the lack of Straps, Ropes or Chains on those Aluminium Gravity bins, which had a very high centre of gravity. A clear breach of Regulation 100 which now runs the risk of prosecution for an ' Insecure Load' now for any Truck Driver in 2011.
Kind Regards
Hi Michael, You may be right about the reason for a 3-axle tractor unit, but I seem to remember that in the late '60s, although the maximum weight for a 4-axle artic was 32tons, under C&U Regs, quite a long outer axle spread was needed. This could only be achieved at the time by using a 40ft trailer with a wide (6ft?) rear bogie spread, otherwise it was limited to 30tons GCW.

In fact, we've seen guys put 44-inch tires on a 1⁄2-ton truck with stock brakes and then wonder why they can't slow their ride down anymore. It's a simple fact that more weight and rotational mass (bigger and heavier tires) require more braking power.
Jeremy found the front axle from an '83 Chevy 1-ton truck. He fitted the axle with a 4.56 gearset and a Detroit Locker for dependable traction. A PSC 21⁄2-inch double-ended steering ram helps keep the steering controllable, and Sway-A-Way coilovers
The axles/shafts and components need to be upgraded. But I would love to replace the whole assemblies (front and rear) with a heavy duty system (including air lockers) if the price is reasonable. 2) Transfer-Case: I know there are good combinations out
2 1/2 ton military axles, tcase, shafts, tires - Great Lakes 4x4 ...
Thanks. they are gmc style-easily converted to work with ANY tcase, not just the one included in the sale. my experience(i swapped gmc's for top loaders) is the gmc is lighter, requires less lift to fit. i had 8 inches of lift with the gmcs-everything fit with a BDS 8 inch kit. when i swapped out the gmc to top loader i needed more lift to clear the top loading diff to oil pan, then the drive shaft hit the trans pan on compression, so next was a divorced tcase which then required a new trans, and a trans crossmember cause the front shaft hit that too. oops. the only benefit i see to top loaders is pinion brakes, or wheel mounted disc brakes(which may swap to gmc's, i'm not sure), and slightly more clearance at the diff housing, unless your going nuts with aftermarket upgrades(lockers, axle shafts, etc).
