Cancer experience motivates Cain to run for presidency
Herman Cain was diagnosed with stage four cancer in 2006.
He and his wife, Gloria, sat for 40 minutes as a young surgeon examined test results and explained that the disease had spread rampantly into his colon. The Cains asked the surgeon some questions. He would undergo chemotherapy. They asked more questions. An abdominal incision would remove the cancerous section of his colon, about a third. The Cains asked the question. There was a 30 percent chance he would survive.
Herman Cain, a revered business executive who saved Godfather’s Pizza from bankruptcy, a motivational speaker and Baptist minister, was scared.
“That will shake you in your face and in your boots,” he later said.
The moment was one of stark clarity, one that would later drive him to run for president of the United States.
As he, his wife and the surgeon prepared to leave, Cain recounted to The Des Moines Register, the surgeon spoke up once more.”
“Well, I hope this helps you,” she said, “but as far as the tumors in your liver, I’m not sure what I’m going to do about those until after I open you up.”
The liver tumors showed on the CAT scan. She thought Cain knew. He didn’t.
He and his wife looked at each other as though they’d seen a ghost. The surgeon explained the liver’s condition as she did with the colon. The Cains didn’t know what questions to ask.
Afterward, the couple left the building and walked to their car, Cain’s face shocked into stillness.
They drove home, and prayed: “Lord, your will be done. But give me the strength to adhere to your will.”
Cain always prayed that way. We don’t know God’s master plan, he said, so it’s wiser just to ask for the strength to endure. That’s how he knew faith to work.
In the following weeks, Cain, in true business form, began strategizing. He researched cancer centers. He asked about doctors. He got second opinions. (“Not all doctors make A’s on the exams,” he said.) He decided on the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, some 800 miles west of his home in Stockbridge, Ga.
He sees his cancer as part of God’s planThe day before Cain left for Houston, longtime friend and supporter Maurice Atkinson stopped by his office for a visit. When Atkinson arrived, he found a different Herman Cain.

Choose Tall Over small Every Day by Ty Howard, Renowned Motivational
When I was a teenager, twenty plus years ago, I can remember having and hanging out with two groups of friends.
My first group of friends believed in hanging out and having continuous fun all the time, yet, their lives had little to no direction or purpose. They mainly went to school to hang out. A few of them failed repeatedly and eventually dropped out of school. Getting a quality education, accomplishing desired goals and getting out of the hood (low income and crime-ridden community) wasn’t going to ruin their perception of living life on their terms, keeping it real, and having continuous fun.
My second group of friends believed in hanging out and having fun too, yet, their lives had direction and purpose. They went to school to learn, achieve, and be fully involved in their educational experience to graduate on time. A few of them graduated at the top of their graduating class. To this group—getting a quality education, accomplishing desired goals and getting out of the hood ‘was’ a priority and a goal that would not be compromised at the expense of hanging out and having too much fun, at the wrong time.
Why did I share this childhood story and example with you?
To be honest with you, I truly enjoyed hanging out with and learning from both groups of friends while growing up. Each group had their negative and positive sides. Each group had people in them that said they truly wanted to make something of themselves in order to get out of the hood. What it all came down to was our actions matching our words, as well as the group I chose to hang out and surround myself with the majority of the time. It became evident and clear. I saw and got the big picture. I slowly began taking a strong liking to the feel of choosing and being amongst the Tall. The rewards and growth were always better.
Every day we have the choice to choose Tall Over small. Small thinkers shrink, while Tall thinkers continuously blink to see, take action and capture a brighter future for themselves. Tall thinkers are not excluded from life’s many challenges and setbacks. Tall thinkers get their dose of life just like small thinkers. The difference is Tall thinkers will always win over small thinkers because they see life challenges as stepping-stones instead of tombstones.
It’s been said again and again, “Life is a Choice. Attitude is a Choice. Success is a Choice.” You can make the choice to lose your life entangled in a group of small-mind people where your mind and aim will soon become small. Or you can make the choice to align yourself with a group of positive thinkers and achievers where your mind and aim will grow Tall.
